Like fortunato readers know very little about montresor s backstory outside of what they can infer from the text. Montresor is the narrator of the short story and the character who turns out to be the killer as he seeks revenge on his acquaintance fortunato. He s a pretty creepy guy and he s not so bright. The story set in an unnamed italian city at carnival time in an unspecified year is about a man taking fatal revenge on a friend who he believes has insulted him.
The protagonist of this story is monstresor. Montressor s friend and his victim. Consequently we can only identify his traits based on his direct characterization or indirectly through the way he acts speaks and thinks. The antogonist is fortunato and the protagonist is montresor.

Montresor is a complex and intriguing character whose desire for revenge drives the story.
