He died in 1992 of heart and kidney failure related to diabetes. It began in august 1969 when someone who claimed to be an active serial killer began writing taunting letters to the top daily newspapers in san francisco.
But his twisted legacy endures having inspired three real life copycat killers and dozens of books tv shows and movies including most famously clint eastwood s nemesis in the film dirty. Obsessed with cracking zodiac s code graysmith became increasingly engrossed in the case eventually abandoning his career as a cartoonist to write a series of true crime novels. The plot is based on the murders committed by the zodiac killer in the san francisco area though it takes many liberties with the actual investigation with the film providing a name and back story for the killer.
