The main task of the daughters of liberty was to protest the stamp act and townshend acts through aiding the sons of liberty in boycotts and non importation movements prior to the outbreak of the revolutionary war the daughters of liberty participated in spinning bees helping to produce homespun cloth for colonists to wear instead of british textiles. Much like the sons of liberty the daughters of liberty was created in response to unfair british taxation in the colonies during the american revolution particularly the townshend acts of 1767 which were a series of measures that imposed customs duties on imported british goods such as glass paints lead paper and tea. Like other secret clubs at the time the sons of liberty had many rituals. Sons of liberty was made up of many who would later go on to sign the declaration of independence.
They had secret code words medals and symbols. They were american patriots northern and southern young and old male and female. Sons of liberty organization formed in the american colonies in the summer of 1765 to oppose the stamp act. The sons of liberty took their name from a speech given in the british parliament by isaac barre in which he referred to the colonials who had opposed unjust british measures as the sons of liberty.
Forming in boston in the summer of 1765 the sons of liberty were artisans shopkeepers and small time merchants willing to adopt extralegal means of protest. The membership included charles thomson haym solomon thomas young paul revere joseph warren. When the sons of liberty first formed in the summer of 1765 the group was originally known as the loyal nine which consisted of nine boston shopkeepers and artisans.
